Why Mistakes Are the Secret to Health and Wellness Success

Perfection won’t get you there: progress, change, and the right mindset will.

I see it all the time. My clients set their goals, make a plan, and start strong, full of determination and focus. The perfectionist part of me totally relates to this. I’ve been there in my own health and wellness journey and I see it every day with the people I coach and can hinder us. But here’s the truth I’ve learned over years in this space: perfection isn’t the goal, and chasing it often gets in the way of real progress. The real growth, the real success, happens through failure. It’s what people in personal development circles call “fail forward fast.”

Fail forward fast means exactly what it sounds like. You make mistakes, learn from them, and keep moving forward. The most valuable lesson isn’t about how to avoid failure, but how to come back from it. Momentum is a powerful thing. I’ve heard from countless people who are crushing their workout routine until one busy day throws them off. That one missed workout turns into two, then three, then four, and before they know it, they’ve quit altogether. But it doesn’t have to be that way. A missed day or a setback doesn’t mean starting over. It means figuring out how to get back on track and build that healthful habit again. That’s how change happens.

I’ve heard it said that wisdom comes from pain, from mistakes, and I couldn’t agree more. When perfection is the objective, we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment and frustration. The willingness to make mistakes and learn from them expands what’s possible. Failure isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of it. In my world of health and wellness, I can almost predict who will maintain their results long-term. When someone loses weight in a straight line, without any hiccups, it usually doesn’t last. But when someone learns how to navigate vacations, holidays, or stressful weeks and keeps going even when it’s not perfect, that’s success. Those are the people who reach their goals and stay there. The key is learning how to adjust and keep moving forward, no matter what comes your way.

My hope for you is that your plan for health and wellness doesn’t mean avoiding life. Don’t skip birthdays, trips, or happy hours just because you’re afraid of falling off track. Those experiences are part of life, and the goal is to handle them a little better each time. Think about how, in the gym, failure is actually the goal. We work a muscle to failure so it can rebuild stronger. The same goes for our habits and our mindset. When a week doesn’t go as planned or the number on the scale isn’t what you hoped, take a pause. Reflect on what didn’t work, then experiment with a new approach the next day. Failure is the goal.

Fail forward fast. Figure things out sooner rather than later. Health and wellness isn’t about never making mistakes; it’s about learning from them and adapting. Our job in this process is to experience every possible situation and practice living with our health in mind. Let’s make space for the moments that don’t go perfectly. Failure shows us where we’re meant to evolve. I invite you to keep going, keep growing, and embrace change as part of the journey to your happiest, healthiest, most successful life.
