When Motivation Tanks, and Your F*cks To Give Are Running Out

What to do when you’re tempted to throw in the towel on healthy habits

Fair warning, there’s only reality and profanity ahead.

We’ve all been there. You eat something indulgent first thing in the morning, maybe something sweet with your coffee, and later in the day someone offers you a cookie. Cue the inner dialogue: “Should I? Shouldn’t I?” Then comes the moment, “Ah, screw it. I already had the muffin this morning.” And just like that, you’re deep in what we affectionately call…the “Fuck Its.”

Sometimes they show up not in a single day, but across a whole season. Maybe you were planning to reset on Monday, but then remember the holidays are coming. Between parties, travel, and end-of-year everything, you push your reset to next Monday…no wait, January? You know the moment: the mental shrug followed by, “Fuck It.”

Here’s the thing—it’s totally normal. We all do it. And no, it doesn’t make you weak or undisciplined. But there is a better way to get through those moments without spiraling or abandoning your health goals altogether. Let’s reframe the “Fuck It” mentality with a simple metaphor.

Picture this: you’re coming home from the grocery store and you drop a carton of eggs. One egg cracks. Do you pick up the carton and toss the other eleven to the ground in frustration? Of course not. You cradle that carton a little more carefully, making sure you don’t lose any more.

But when it comes to our health habits, that’s not always how we treat ourselves. One misstep, and we throw in the towel, like we’ve already “ruined” the day. That muffin at breakfast becomes permission to eat junk all day. The big meal at the holiday party becomes a pass to skip movement and binge for the rest of the weekend. That’s not being human. That’s dropping one egg and smashing the rest on purpose. This is your reminder: One choice doesn’t undo all your progress.

That cookie isn’t a failure. Neither is skipping a workout. We have so many moments in a day, week, and month to support our well-being, let’s focus on those. The “other eleven eggs” are your nourishing meals, your protein and fiber at lunch, your afternoon walk, your water intake, your bedtime routine, your vitamins, your breathwork, your decision to cook dinner instead of ordering in. You’ve got way more “wins” than you’re probably giving yourself credit for.

When we shift our perspective from perfection to protection, we step out of the guilt spiral and into something a lot more sustainable. One choice doesn’t define the day, week, or season. It’s just a choice. The next one is yours too.

So this holiday season (or really anytime) if one egg breaks, protect the other eleven. Make room for life and celebration. But don’t lose sight of your goals just because one moment didn’t go perfectly.

Remember: long-term wellness isn’t built on being perfect. It’s built on resilience, consistency, and knowing that even when things go awry, you’re still doing a lot right. Here’s to fewer “Fuck Its,” and a lot more “I’ve got this.”
