Mini Mindset Shifts That Support Your Waistline and Your Why
So you’re in a funk. Yeah, I’ve been there too. Starting a new routine or trying to stick with healthy habits can feel like an uphill battle, especially when you’re going after those shiny new goals again—whether it’s January or just another Monday. I remember one day during my own long road with weight management, I was venting to my coach about all the things I felt like I couldn’t do anymore. I wasn’t eating what my friends were eating, skipping the usual lunch spots with coworkers, and every food choice felt complicated. It all just felt harder than it should be.
And while I expected a little sympathy, what I got instead was a diagnosis: a case of the “PLOMs.”
Nope, not plums. You heard right—PLOMs. That stands for “poor little ol’ me.” It’s the name we give to that defeated, pouty voice in our heads when healthy choices start feeling like punishment instead of empowerment. That little whiny feeling can sneak up on all of us, especially when we’re making progress and suddenly become hyper-aware of what other people are doing. Why do their choices look easier? Why does it seem like they don’t have to work this hard? Why does my diet motivation feel like it’s running on fumes?
But here’s what I tell my clients (and what I always need to remind myself too): this phase won’t last forever. The struggle isn’t permanent. What you’re doing right now is building new habits. And instead of focusing on what you can’t do, flip the script. You GET to make decisions that move you toward your goals. You GET to be someone who puts themselves first. That mindset shift right there? That’s part of learning how to change your mindset for weight loss. It changes the entire game.
And yeah, when I say “PLOMs” out loud in a silly, dramatic voice, it makes me laugh—which totally helps interrupt that negative spiral. Humor is sneaky like that.
When a fresh calendar gives us a blank page, we also get the chance to change the story we tell ourselves. It’s not about restriction or being “good” all the time. It’s about saying yes to your own growth. You don’t have to keep living on autopilot or doing what’s easy just because everyone else is doing it. Choosing something different is brave. And it’s worth it.
That might mean meal prepping for the week, packing a nourishing snack, or even finding healthy fast food options that work for your goals when you’re on the go. You don’t have to ditch convenience—you’re just redefining it on your terms. These little shifts are the real-life version of weight loss tips and motivation that actually work—because they start from the inside out.
So next time you feel yourself spiraling into a “why me” moment, stop. Acknowledge that you’re just in a little PLOM episode. Then choose to be proud instead. Because that choice—the one where you remind yourself that you’re showing up, even when it’s tough—that’s what healthy diet motivation actually looks like.
