Have you ever heard the tale of the bamboo tree? It’s one of those folktales that stays with you long after you’ve heard it. I came across it a while back and knew I had to share it. You can find written versions, but there are also some great videos on YouTube if you’re more of a visual learner.
It begins with a man who is completely frustrated with life. No matter how hard he tries, nothing seems to work. Every effort ends in failure, and he feels defeated. Eventually, he gives up and retreats to the woods, deciding there’s no point in continuing. There, he meets a hermit and pours out his heart, asking for one good reason not to quit. The hermit listens and then points to a fern plant and a bamboo tree growing nearby.
He tells the man that he planted both seeds at the same time and cared for them equally. Each received sunlight, water, and fertilizer. The fern sprouted quickly and grew strong, but the bamboo seed showed no visible growth year after year. Still, the hermit never gave up on it and continued to nurture it, trusting that something was happening beneath the surface.
After five long years, the bamboo finally broke through the ground with a small sprout. Within six months, that same bamboo tree grew over a hundred feet tall. The man was amazed and asked how it could grow so fast. The hermit explained that during those years of seeming stillness, the bamboo had been developing a root system deep underground. It was building the strength and stability it needed to sustain the rapid growth that would follow. Without that foundation, it never could have survived.
The hermit looked at the man and said that maybe his struggles were the same. Maybe all this time, he had been growing strong roots.
When I first heard this, it hit me right in the heart. The story is a beautiful reflection of life itself and a reminder of what I see so often as a health coach. Growth isn’t always visible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. In today’s world, it’s easy to feel like your progress is slow or nonexistent, but resiliency is built in those quiet, unseen moments. That’s realistic wellness.
If you feel like you’re doing all the right things but still struggling, trust that you might be building your foundation right now. Your inner strength is taking root beneath the surface, preparing you for the next stage of your journey.
Keep going. Keep nurturing yourself, just like the bamboo.
