What you need to know about trans fats and your health
When we hear the word “fat,” it is easy for our minds to jump to the worst thoughts. Unhealthy, unattractive, avoid it at all costs, public enemy number one. But what if fats were not all bad? What if understanding the differences between types of fats could completely change how you approach your health? Stick with me because I have the nutrition tips you need to feel confident.
Busting a Major Wellness Myth about Fats
The first wellness myth we need to tackle is the idea that all fat is bad. Spoiler alert, it is NOT. I know, it feels wild to say that out loud. For years, fat has gotten a terrible reputation, yet so many people still feel confused about it. So let’s set the record straight. Today we are focusing on trans fats, but first, we need a little refresher on fats overall. In the simplest terms, there are two main categories of fats: unsaturated and saturated.
Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and are the ones we want to prioritize. Big win. Think olive oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, and other similar choices. Then we have saturated fats, which are solid at room temperature. A good visual is the marbling in a steak. If you leave it on the counter, the fat will stay put, not melt away. Our bodies do need a small amount of saturated fats, but honestly, you will naturally get them through everyday eating so there is no need to seek them out.
Then there is one kind of fat we want to avoid completely: trans fats.
Understanding the Sneaky Danger of Trans Fats
Trans fats start out liquid but are turned into a solid through a process where food manufacturers pump them with hydrogen. This chemical tweak changes the structure of the fat and makes it shelf-stable. That means the food can sit around without separating or spoiling for way longer than it should. Great for processed foods. Not so great for us.
From a business point of view, it makes perfect sense. It keeps those processed cakes and cookies moist and fresh-looking on the shelf. Less waste equals more profit. But from a women’s wellness perspective, and frankly anyone’s wellness, it is a big red flag.
What complicates things even more is that while the FDA banned trans fats, marketing still plays games with us. You have probably seen packages that scream “no trans fats” or “0g trans fats.” Sadly, that can be false. The rule actually says that a product can claim 0g if it contains .5g or less per serving. And food-label math lets companies round down. If you eat more than one serving, those sneaky .5g add up fast. Zero plus zero does not always equal zero. Wild, right?
The Simple Nutrition Tip You Need for Safer Shopping
Here is where you become a super-savvy consumer without feeling overwhelmed. Forget obsessing over the nutrition panel numbers and go straight to the ingredients list. Look for any words like “modified,” “fractionated,” “hydrogenated,” or “hydrolyzed” attached to an oil. If you see any of those, just put the box back on the shelf like a boss. No drama needed.
These terms mean that the oil was chemically altered to make the food last longer. As one of my favorite mentors, a naturopathic doctor, says, the longer the food’s shelf life, the shorter yours might be. It sounds extreme but trust me, it is a point worth remembering when it comes to women’s wellness and overall health.
It might sound dramatic, but the health risks associated with trans fats are real. The good news is you have so much more control than you think. Avoiding trans fats as much as possible is one of the smartest nutrition tips I can give you. It starts with checking the ingredients before tossing packaged foods into your cart. Better yet, aim for foods that do not even have a label, like fruits and vegetables. Mother Nature does not need a nutrition label.
Now, let’s keep it real. We are human. We will eat processed foods at some point. That is why learning this stuff matters. You now have the information to make empowered decisions. And when you put those small changes together over time, I am willing to bet you will see and feel a major difference.
