Why Building Muscle Is Key to a Leaner, Healthier You
We all know about muscle, but many of us aren’t sure why it’s so important. There are always the “muscle guys” at the gym lifting weights like it’s no big deal, or the Instagram influencers with perfect bodies that seem almost too good to be true (seriously, is there a filter for that?). This can leave many of us asking, “Where do I fit in? Do I have to look like that to be healthy? I’m not sure if I can do that.” Here’s the good news—you don’t have to! Let’s break it all down so you know exactly what you need to focus on.
First, you’ve probably heard the phrase “muscle weighs more than fat,” right? It’s one of those statements that can cause confusion, especially when you’re working toward a healthier weight or body composition. But let’s clear this up because it’s not entirely accurate. A pound is a pound—whether it’s muscle or fat, it still weighs the same. The real difference is that muscle is more dense than fat, so a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. Picture fat like a bag of sand and muscle as a brick. The person who weighs 170lbs and has more muscle will look smaller than someone of the same weight who has a higher body fat percentage. This is why it’s important to pay less attention to the number on the scale and more attention to how you feel and how your body looks.
Now here’s the tricky part: how do you build muscle, yet see the scale stay the same—or even go up? I know it sounds counterintuitive, but here’s the reason: muscle affects your metabolism. This is a key point I remind my clients all the time. It’s not always easy to find time for a workout routine, and some people worry about getting too bulky (I’ll talk about that in a minute). Plus, we’ve been told for years that cardio is the way to go for weight loss. The truth, though, is that the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn—even while at rest! If you want to eat more freely and not see the same changes in your body as you did before, building muscle is key.
And let’s talk about that “bulky” concern. Ladies, I get it. You’re worried about getting huge muscles just from picking up some dumbbells. I’m here to tell you that’s just not going to happen. You don’t have the testosterone levels for that kind of muscle growth! What you will notice, though, is that your body will become leaner and tighter due to increased metabolism and the shape of your toned muscles. Want to know how to build that muscle? It’s simple—resistance training! Lift heavy weights or use bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, or pushups. You can also use resistance bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, or a medicine ball to add variety. Stick with it, and you’ll definitely see results!
Ultimately, building muscle isn’t something to fear. It makes you healthier, stronger, and leaner. So get moving and allow your body to grow in a new way. Remember, muscle dictates metabolism, and that’s a good thing!
