Small Steps, Big Momentum

Simple actions to build momentum and keep your mindset strong

If you’re chasing a wellness goal or even a business goal, we’re at that tricky time of year. The moment when you feel like throwing in the towel, hanging it up, or forgetting the towel existed altogether. Burnout creeps in. You might feel like you’ve messed up too many times or haven’t built the momentum you expected by now. The reality is this is exactly the opposite of what will serve your progress. As a health coach, I share a little tool with my clients to keep in their back pockets. It’s called KMF: Keep Moving Forward.

When those thoughts pop up, when negative self-talk whispers “f-it,” say to yourself KMF. Just KMF. The only way to fail is to quit. Everything else along the way is teaching us. When life happens and our new habits don’t unfold as ideally as we hoped, it’s completely fine. Resilience is built here.

Every goal is a continuing journey. There’s no such thing as failure, only steps along the way that build momentum. Every day offers a chance to take action in the direction of what you want. Mistakes and discovering what doesn’t work, the things you call failures, help you learn to bob and weave as long as you keep going. Of course, this is easier said than done, so here are some tips to put this mantra into practice.

Get out of your head. Write it down, talk to a friend, or record a quick voice note. Let go of the running tape of what happened. Putting it on paper or sharing it frees up mental space for the next thought and the next step.

Take action. Even small steps matter. Drink a glass of water, take a walk outside for fresh air, or move around the house. Motion builds momentum. Don’t wait for the “perfect” time to start. Every action is a step forward. After the first step comes the second. Small steps repeated consistently create real progress. Habits are the engine that carries you forward.

It’s tempting to walk away from a goal entirely. Comfort is so appealing when growth requires a bit of discomfort. Or maybe you’ve seen progress and then stalled, like you’ve hit a plateau. This is the perfect moment to remember KMF: Keep Moving Forward. Reset your mindset, take another action, and trust that resilience compounds over time.
