16 Ideas for August to Get Ahead of the Fall Season
While summer can be exciting with days by the water, gatherings with family and friends and soaking up the sunshine, it can also feel chaotic. No two days look alike. Then Labor Day arrives, and suddenly we are supposed to flip a switch back to routines, school nights, and responsibilities. It can feel like being hit by a Mack truck.
This year, I am choosing a different path. I am using August to get organized so I can walk into fall feeling calm, steady, and prepared. Every time I have done this in the past it lifts my energy and supports my mental wellness in such a noticeable way. When my clients do these same things, they experience the same shift. It is not a coincidence.
So let us do it together. Here are sixteen ways we can get organized this month. I grouped them to support the major parts of daily life. Your tech. Your home. Yourself. You can start at the top and spend one or two days on each task so you finish by the end of the month. You can also rotate through categories or add everything to your calendar so you have reminders. Whatever approach works for you is the right one. And absolutely keep me posted on your progress in the comments.
For Your Phone and Computer
Our phones and computers have essentially become extensions of our hands. Most of us use them to do practically everything, which means they deserve a little cleaning and organizing, too. Let us start with six tasks that can support calm, productivity, and mental wellness by clearing digital clutter.
- Clean out your inbox. Unsubscribe from emails you never open and create folders for anything you want to keep for later. You can even create rules so new emails move directly into the right folder.
- Declutter your computer desktop. Move files into folders, delete shortcuts you never use, and close accounts that no longer serve you.
- Create a spreadsheet or use tools like LastPass or 1Password to keep your passwords organized.
- Declutter your phone. Just like your computer desktop, clean up the home screen. Remove apps you do not use and group the ones you rely on into folders.
- Tackle your photos. Organize and clean them out. Create folders and delete duplicates so you have space for memories that actually matter.
- Use your phone as a tool. If you want to remember something, put it in your calendar with an alert. Set timers to help you stay focused. It is amazing what you can get done in twenty minutes when you give yourself structure.
Around The House
A messy home can chip away at your inner peace. Not knowing where things are or constantly stepping over clutter can raise stress and stall your productivity. Cleaning can actually support mental wellness because an organized environment helps your mind feel organized, too. Let us bring calm into the space around us. Whether it is your whole home or just your room, every bit counts.
- Set a timer for ten minutes and tidy as much as you can. Try adding this to your calendar. It is a great way to start the day or wind down before bed.
- Clean out your closet or storage bins. Use a box, a bag, and a laundry basket. Garbage goes in the bag. Donations go in the box. Things that belong somewhere else go in the basket. The basket becomes its own project for another day.
- Create weekly cleaning zones. List all the spaces and assign each one to a day or a week. Put it on your calendar with an alarm. Keeping the promise to yourself is the key.
- Make your bed every morning. It takes about ninety seconds and starts your day with a small win.
- Put things back where they belong. Everything you tossed into the laundry basket earlier finally gets returned to its rightful home.
For Yourself
Beyond cleaning your tech and your home, we need to take care of ourselves too. Supporting your own mental wellness through structure and preparation sets you up for success. A few small habits can make your days feel calmer and more grounded.
- Take five minutes to look at your calendar for the week and the month. Notice what is coming up and block time so you are prepared. Fewer surprises can mean less stress.
- Set out your clothes the night before.
- Do a little meal prep for the week. Chop veggies. Hard-boil eggs. Cook one or two items you can mix and match for quick meals. Here is a helpful “how-to” on this.
- Track your finances. I know this one can feel uncomfortable. Start by setting up a system like Expensify, Hurdlr, or a simple spreadsheet so you can track your spending moving forward.
- Create a healthy morning routine. Think about what helps you feel your best at the start of the day and plan it out. Try it once and adjust as needed. You can explore more here.
Organization Is Key
Between all the fun and the unpredictability of summer, it is natural to arrive in September feeling scattered. These quick and simple organization tips can help you declutter key areas of daily life so you can feel calmer and more productive. You will feel a noticeable shift once your physical and digital spaces feel lighter. I always recommend doing at least one thing each day. Slowly, these habits become part of your natural rhythm.
Let us take this month to tidy up different parts of our lives so we can start the fall season feeling grounded, energized, and ready for whatever comes next. You can do this. We are in it together.
