Healthy Eating Out: Nutrition Tips for Your Next Chick-fil-A Run

A Bite-Size Read for Your Health and Waistline

Here’s something that might surprise you: I can find something that fits a balanced diet anywhere. As a health coach, I see my clients and podcast listeners take on this challenge all the time. Most assume fast food will be the exception, but that’s rarely the case. Since Chick-fil-A is the highest-grossing fast food chain per franchise in the country, let’s talk about how to stay healthy eating out and how to make smart menu choices that support your goals.

The good news? Chick-fil-A offers several healthy alternatives. With grilled chicken options, fruit, Greek yogurt, and a kale salad, you can absolutely stick to healthy eating out if you know what to look for. Let’s explore the menu by category and apply a few simple nutrition tips to help you make choices that fit your lifestyle.

Morning Picks
My top pick is the hash brown scramble bowl with grilled filets. At 420 calories with 31 grams of protein and 13 grams of net carbs, it’s impressive for fast food. Yes, it contains 1,230 milligrams of sodium, but that’s part of the trade-off when eating out instead of cooking at home.

Here’s something unexpected: the berry parfait with cookie crumbles is actually a smarter choice than the same parfait with granola. The cookie crumble version has 240 calories and 12 grams of protein. Compared to the so-called “healthier” granola topping, the cookie crumbles offer fewer carbs, less sugar, and fewer calories overall—a small but meaningful win for your balanced diet.

Grilled Goodies
If you want grilled chicken, Chick-fil-A has you covered. The grilled nuggets are an excellent option, with eight pieces providing just 130 calories and 25 grams of protein. Pair them with a side salad or double up the order to reach a satisfying protein target of around 50 grams.

The grilled chicken sandwich is another great pick. It includes about four ounces of grilled chicken, delivering 28 grams of protein with a bright lemon marinade that tastes great even without sauce. If you must add one, barbecue is your best bet over the signature Chick-fil-A sauce.

The Cool Wrap is another menu item worth mentioning. This wrap is made with sliced grilled chicken breast, greens, cheese, and a flaxseed flour flatbread, and it packs 43 grams of protein and 14 grams of fiber. It’s 660 calories, which is a bit higher in fat and sodium than ideal, but the protein and fiber combo makes it a solid choice for those focused on healthy eating out.

Soup or Salad?
Chick-fil-A salads fall somewhere in the middle—not amazing, but not bad either. The cobb salad with crispy nuggets gives you 42 grams of protein but also 830 calories and 2,220 milligrams of sodium. The market salad with grilled nuggets is a lighter option at 570 calories and 32 grams of protein, though it’s a bit on the sweeter side due to the fruit.

Depending on your goals, that cool wrap may actually serve you better than either salad. But don’t overlook the soups. The chicken tortilla soup (seasonal) has 340 calories, 24 grams of protein, and 17 grams of fiber from the shredded chicken, navy beans, and black beans. Pair it with the kale crunch side salad for a balanced meal that supports your nutrition goals.

Fries
Let’s be honest—those waffle fries have a fan club. And yes, they’re part of the fun when you’re eating at Chick-fil-A. A large order has 600 calories and 35 grams of fat, while a small order comes in at 320 calories. They’re not the healthiest pick, but they’re also not the worst. Sometimes, fries just hit the spot. Here’s one of my favorite nutrition tips: share the fries. Order your grilled chicken and veggies, then split a small fry. It’s all about balance.

Which Sauce?
Everyone loves the signature Chick-fil-A sauce, but nutritionally, it’s not doing you many favors. If you’re aiming to keep your meal within your balanced diet, go for barbecue or buffalo sauce instead. Of course, if that signature flavor is your favorite, enjoy it—just be aware of what it adds and decide if it’s worth it for you.

The Bottom Line
I’m genuinely impressed with how many healthy alternatives Chick-fil-A has on the menu. Between the grilled chicken, high-protein wraps, and fiber-rich sides, it’s easy to make choices that align with healthy eating out. The trade-offs are mostly in fat and sodium, which is typical for fast food, but awareness goes a long way.

The key is knowing what to look for and choosing intentionally. Whether it’s adding grilled chicken to your breakfast bowl, picking soup with a side salad, or skipping the sauce, these small decisions can make a big impact on your nutrition and help keep your health goals on track.
