Getting Friendly With Fiber

How fiber supports digestion, fullness, and overall wellness

You have heard me say it before if you have read my pieces and I will say it again. Protein and fiber at every meal, make removing fat no big deal. Some of you might be thinking, what even is fiber and how am I supposed to get more of it? Fiber bars? Supplements? Not quite. The answer is way simpler and way better for your body. All you need is more vegetables and sometimes fruit in your diet. But how do you really know if you are getting enough? And what is fiber even doing once it is inside you? Keep reading because in just a few minutes you will have all the answers you need for better gut health and weight loss.

When talking about the latest nutrition hacks, cutting carbs is usually one of the first things people try. If you have listened to my podcast or read my recent articles, you know I am all about balance when it comes to women’s wellness. We do not want no-carb or even strict low-carb diets. Instead, we want quality carbs. Nutrient dense foods are where it is at. These foods are packed with the vitamins, minerals, and fiber our bodies need to truly thrive.

The Two Types of Fiber and Why You Need Both

There are two kinds of fiber and both are important. I like to call fiber the scrubbing bubbles of our intestines because that is exactly how it works. It helps deep clean our system and keeps everything moving the way it should. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance. You will find it in foods like beans, legumes, citrus fruits, peas, oats, and bran. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve. It moves through the digestive tract mostly intact and shows up in foods like cabbage, carrots, brussels sprouts, whole rye, and whole wheat. Think of insoluble fiber like the bristles of a brush that loosen everything up and soluble fiber like the suds that carry it all away.

Fiber’s Not-So-Secret Superpower for Your Health

Beyond giving your insides a nice bath, fiber plays a huge role in elimination. Yep, we are talking about poop. When we go, we are getting rid of toxins and waste that our bodies do not need. Without enough fiber, constipation can sneak up on you and stick around. Long-term issues here can lead to even bigger health problems. So yes, getting enough fiber is one of the simplest and most powerful nutrition hacks for women’s wellness.

Another awesome thing about fiber is how it supports steady energy and blood sugar levels. Since it takes our bodies longer to process fiber, it helps us feel full longer. It slows down how quickly energy hits our bloodstream which leads to fewer crashes and cravings. A fiber-rich diet is linked to lower cholesterol, better blood sugar maintenance, and a longer, healthier life overall. It is no surprise that fiber is a huge piece of the puzzle when it comes to realistic, sustainable weight loss.

How to Hit Your Daily Fiber Goals Without the Fuss

So how do we actually get enough fiber every day? Focus on veggies and fruit because they are the best natural sources. With a little commitment, you can absolutely meet the daily goal. Most Americans only eat about 10–15 grams of fiber per day, compared to the 100 grams our ancestors were eating. I recommend aiming for 25 to 30 grams daily, which works out to about 12 servings of veggies. I am generally not a fan of fiber powders or bars because they can backfire. They often cause a negative response in the body and sometimes sweep away some of the good gut health benefits we want to keep. Plus, too much fiber without enough water can actually cause constipation too. Sticking to real food keeps things simple and safe. So at every meal and snack, toss on an extra handful or two of greens. Maybe even light a candle and grab a good book while your body gets its very own scrubbing bubble bath.
